How to Choosing Mattress Fabric
Update:20 Oct
Most mattress manufacturers will feature a woven fabric on their mattress panel. This fabric is often referred to as Belgian damask, but is actually made in several different countries. While most mattress manufacturers tend to stick to one fabric supplier, some manufacturers use multiple suppliers and have their own specialties. Most fabric is sourced from Europe, though some companies are sourcing from Asia, such as China and India.
In years past, a mattress would only feature one outer fabric, often a simple blue and white stripe. However, today, woven and knit fabrics are available in a variety of patterns and colors. Mattresses are now viewed as an extension of the other furnishings in a room and their covers should reflect that style.
Mattress fabrics made from synthetic materials are also available, including wool and cotton. While these materials are more durable and easy to clean, they are not as comfortable as natural materials. If you have skin or chemical sensitivities, you may want to avoid polyester mattresses. If you are looking for a mattress that will last for years, you may want to consider natural materials like cotton or bamboo.
If you are purchasing a new bed, consider the fabric as well as the innersprings and foam layers. You may also want to consider the quilting on top. The outer layer should be soft and comfortable. The waterproofing should be non-abrasive.
